Stitch Fix Review - October 2014

First - Don't forget to enter to win my LUSH Holiday Haul Giveaway! I'm giving away a bunch of fun LUSH bath products and your favorite LUSH product! Earn up to five entries, giveaway is open until Thanksgiving!

It's been a few months since you've seen a Stitch Fix review here on the blog for one major reason - I haven't gotten any fixes! Looks like my last fix was in May of this year. Though, there are smaller reasons that contributed to me not getting any Stitch Fix packages.

1. I was traveling so much over the past few months, I was having trouble scheduling my fixes. A fix would inevitably arrive when I was out of town and I would wind up with only a day to look at, photograph and choose the items in the box.

2. Stitch fix kept sending me the same thing. Over and over and over again. How many tab-sleeve blouses or waterfall cardigans does a girl need? Apparently SF thinks I need about fifteen of them. I gave SF a break for the summer to see if their stock turned over.

3. We bought a house. I didn't want to spend my pennies (even just the $20 styling fee) on clothes. I needed to save them all for the down-payment and pending renovation.

With all of those reasons I listed, why are you seeing a Stitch Fix review today? Simple, I had a $25 credit that was just burning a hole in my SF account! I scheduled this fix for arrival in mid-September and asked for fall transition pieces (yes, I'm a little bit behind on posting this fix). As you can see, I didn't get any fall transition pieces and this fix looks more appropriate for the summer. I was needless to say, a little disappointed.

First thing out of the box was this navy blue top. I actually had been looking for a navy blouse for layering under my grey suit, so this piece was convenient. It's not ever going to be the star of an outfit. Thankfully I had my SF credit, because at $54, this piece was way more expensive that it should have been.

Collective Concepts - Esten Button-Up Sleeveless Blouse - $54

Next up, another half-button front blouse. I have seriously gotten ten of these tops (yes, I counted). I didn't mind the print or the cut of this blouse. I didn't keep it though because I'm afraid they'll just keep sending me more of them! Also, I don't consider this a chevron print, it's really more of a herringbone print.

Amour Vert - Alessandro Chevron Print Button Front Silk Blouse - $118

I really liked this maxi skirt. I would have definitely kept it, if only it had arrived in my spring box and not my fall box. I hate buying things that I can't wear for months - Especially at full price (and this wasn't cheap). To find a maxi skirt that is long enough for me is quite a chore. I even really liked the print. Again, I was just annoyed that they sent me this skirt in September, when I asked for fall transition pieces.

Tart - Caroline Batik Circle Printed Maxi Skirt - $128

The last two items were a hit and a miss. The necklace looks really nice in the photograph, but it felt pretty cheap. I'm fairly certain that I would have broken it immediately. The top (which I never bothered to take a full length picture of!) was a keeper. I loved the color-blocking and the blue. The only problem is - it has no sleeves. Yes, you can layer it under cardigans and blazers, but then you lose the cute color-blocking detail that I love! This shirt will probably see more use in the spring and summer, but will be useful in the fall/winter as a layer.

Bay to Baubles - Betsey Gem Triangle Layering Necklace - $28
Kut from the Kloth - Murphy Colorblock Button-Up Blouse - $68

I wound up keeping two of five items from this fix. I didn't schedule a fix for the next month and I probably won't be doing anymore Stitch fix boxes. I'll be doing a short post next month with all of my reasons for falling off the Stitch Fix bandwagon.

If you're curious about my previous fixes, here they are!

Fly Away

How do you get away with wearing a bright orange, bird print dress to work? By pairing it with killer shoes.

And a gorgeous handbag.

I got this dress last year in one of my summer Stitch Fix boxes and didn't wear it until last week. I just wasn't sure how or where to wear the dress. I recently picked up these Givenchy heels at Century 21 for a steal and have been wearing them almost non-stop since. I decided they were just the perfect accessory for a sweet, printed dress.

These heels are a mixture of flat black leather, suede and snakeskin-embossed leather. Not only are they beautiful, they are so comfortable! I really should buy more heels of this height. I can wear them all day long and on into the evening.

Do you wear summer brights to the office? Or would you save a dress like this for the weekend? (If you are a small, I found this dress for a steal here!)

Also, have you noticed how long my hair has gotten! It feels like it was short, short, short and then all of a sudden, LONG! I really need a hair cut. Sadly, my stylist was all booked up for the next two weeks!

Day to Night - Take Two!

Hi Everyone! I'm back in New Jersey and back in the office. With the start of summer, I'm no longer heading straight home and hiding under heavy blankets. This time of year is my favorite time to take the train into the city for a fun evening with the boyfriend. Since I commute to my job via the train, it's faster for me to go straight to Manhattan rather than stop at home to change.

This just leaves one problem that I'm sure you all have with summertime day-to-night looks.  It's freezing in the office, but so beautiful outside! This is how I take my look from my desk to the restaurant...

The whole look is based on a black dress. Not a traditional, office appropriate black dress. I picked up this dress a few months ago, but didn't have the chance to wear it yet. To bring the dress to office appropriate levels, I tossed on this blue blazer that I got from Stitch Fix! Flats are my go to shoe when I wear a skirt this length to work. I love this pair from Marc by Marc Jacobs because they look like little mice!

My accessories are the usual office set - big bag for commuting on the train, Fitbit for tracking my steps and my favorite 3D printed necklace from Nervous System.

When it comes to work makeup, I keep it simple. Eyeliner, tinted lip balm and mascara.

When it's time to head to the city, the shoulders come out!

I fell in love with this sweetheart neckline of this Rebecca Minkoff dress.

The boyfriend was smitten with the back of this dress and insisted that I buy it. The back of the dress is the major reason I added the blazer for the office! It's a little too sexy for work!

Heading to the city, I leave the big bag at work and swap it out for this fun clutch. I also trade out my Fitbit for a rose gold chain. I always carry my Fitbit though, it's just in the clutch. Gotta catch every step I take!

And I'm off to the catch the train to the city!

How do you take your day looks into night?

Bluefly still has this dress in stock in a few sizes!  Major sale!!! Go get it before its gone...

2014 Budget - April Recap

I'm a little late in my monthly budget recap because I have been out of town for most of the past month! All my travels have helped me keep on track with my spending. Though on my recent trip to London, I did pick up a few British designer pieces. But that's for the May recap. Here's what I picked up last month.

I picked up this pencil skirt from Bloomingdale's during one of their big sales last month. Not only does it have fun leather panels at the hips, it also has a full zipper running up the back. I've worn it many times to work already.

Elie Tahari - Maureen Skirt - $83 (Original - $268)

You've seen these jeans before, I got them in my Stitch Fix box last month! I love them and wore them all over London a few weeks ago.

Sold Design Lab Jeans (Similar) - $148

I looked all over the place for a cute purse for my giant work laptop. I found the perfect one in the Rebecca Minkoff M.A.B. Tote. It is just long enough to fit my laptop, with enough room to toss in my heels and lunch. Bonus? I picked it up at Saks Off 5th for 60% off!

Rebecca Minkoff - M.A.B. Tote $130.00 (Original - $295)

And that's it! I spent two of the four weekends out of town and didn't do any other shopping. You should expect that I did just as good during this month to stick to my budget. You would be wrong though. I had four days on my own in London and I enjoyed a little shopping around the Oxford Circus! But the pieces I picked up at super adorable and totally worth hitting the upper limit of my budget!

Total spent in April - $361
Price before sales - $711
Total Savings - $350
Amount under budget - $139

2014 Budget
January - $614.07
February - $1,693.09
March - $110.50
April - $361.00

Stitch Fix #13 - May 2014

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't been around much this week, I traveled from London to Berlin on Monday and have been attending a conference this week with a colleague. It's left little time for blogging, photography or really anything other than work. As a bonus, all the travel these past few months has caught up with me and I got a cold. Boo.

We had a half day of conferencing on Wednesday, which I had wanted to spend touring Berlin. Sadly, I spent the entire day in my hotel room with my fluffy blankets, watching CNN and youtube videos. Did you know that you can't access Hulu or Netflix from Germany. Sucks. Hopefully this cold virus passes soon and I'm better for my return trip to New Jersey this weekend. My next meeting in Australia has been cancelled, so at least May isn't a full month of travel!

Okay, enough complaining, onto the reason you probably clicked the link today. It's time for another Stitch Fix box! It's been over a year that I have been getting fixes and I've really come to a good understanding of the company, as their stylists have totally gotten to know me. Still haven't heard of Stitch Fix? Check out this post from last summer and I will fill you in on all the details.

This month (or actually last month, as I'm a bit behind!), I asked for spring transition pieces, color and stuff for work. Everything they sent me this month was totally my style and lots of fun. Did I keep everything? No. There were some fit issues here and there, and if you remember, I only want to add really special things to my closet. I already have so much stuff!  Let's get to the pieces!

Under Skies - Abbie Pintuck Button Back Blouse
Sold Design Lab - Christopher Distressed Boyfriend Jean

A few months ago, I asked SF for some boyfriend jeans. Apparently they didn't have any at that time, but they didn't forget about my request! These jeans, by SOLD design lab, are just what I've been looking for. Slightly distressed, perfect fit at the waist and just long enough to look good rolled or straight. I brought them on my trip to Europe and have been wearing them on my off days.

The green top was sweet and pretty, it actually buttons down in the back also. While I liked the laser cut details, it was the blousey nature of the top that I wasn't a fan of. I just kind of ballooned out at the stomach and wasn't terribly flattering on me.

Donna Morgan - Harmony Geo Print Panel Detail Dress

This dress is a great idea, but not on me! The pattern play of the dress was perfect through the top, but it lost me after the empire waist. The fabric ballooned out and would have been perfect if I were a few months pregnant. The black stripes also gave me some serious looking hips. This dress just wasn't destined to be!

Amour Vert - Alessandro Floral Print Silk Henley Blouse

From all the pictures that I posted of this top, you would have thought that I kept it. I really wanted to, but it just didn't fit right! Apparently I have some really muscley shoulders and the arm hole was just too tight. The print was such a beautiful and simple design and I could imagine wearing it with so many things. Sadly, it just wasn't right and it went back to SF.

Bay to Baubles - Tricia Gen & Chain Statement Necklace

This necklace was the only thing in this fix that I really hated. For the price point, $38, it felt way too cheap. I live near a Charming Charlies and they sell things like this for maybe $15. The combination of the chunky chain and the pastel stones weren't doing it for me. Back into the return bag it went.

So overall this was a great fix! I got some jeans that I've been searching for, tried on some really pretty pieces and had a fun afternoon shooting these images in the sun. With my many trips this May, I won't be getting a Fix until June. Here's hoping it's full of color and prints!

Stitch Fix - 12 Months in Review

It's been one year, 12 fixes and 18 new articles of clothing for my closet. It's interesting for me to look back at these photos and reminisce about the past year. Just one week before my first fix was to arrive, my company laid off me and the rest of my coworkers. The photos take me from firing, through my summer of funemployment, into the fall of interviews and out the other side into winter and a new job.

My hair went from growing out, to a bit of a mess, to styled and colored once again. I could tell you which photos were taken right after a fresh cut and color! I remember sweating it out in July and August, freezing in light dresses before Christmas and wishing for sunshine this spring. I know who shot each months photographs and I'm super glad I switched quickly from using my iPhone to shooting with my Canon!

Most of all though, I remember all of these fixes. It's been a year of hits and misses, but I think that I've been able to add a whole bunch of fun pieces to my wardrobe. Last summer, I kept several dresses and blouses that I never got to wear. I was unemployed, why would I wear a blouse? I'm looking forward to several of these pieces finally making their debuts.

Some pieces have already seen their fair share of days in the sun. My favorite piece of the year has to be the Ark & Co neoprene skirt that I got in December. I wore it all winter with tights and it has already been paired up with a springy blouse this month. My Purple cords and the magenta necklace are also commonplace in my wardrobe.

Sadly, there are a few items that make me wonder what I was thinking. I didn't wear that black polka dotted sweater once before I gave it to a friend. I'm still not quite sure how to style that green tunic top. I was taking a lot more items from my first few fixes, the novelty of it all made me go crazy. These days I'm getting nearly perfectly curated fixes, but I'm only taking one or two items per fix.

It's certainly been an interesting year and this is a strange way to look back on it. I do have to say thank you to Stitch Fix. They gave me something to look forward to each month this summer. They cheered me up when I was a little sad about my jobless situation. It's a small thing that they did for me, but I seriously enjoyed it!

Have you tried Stitch Fix yet? Have you been doing it for a while or just a month? Let me know your thoughts. I'm interested in hearing other peoples experiences!

Stitch Fix #12 - April 2014

Spring has sprung and Stitch Fix has come through with some of the freshest pieces for the season! I barely lasted through the long long winter that we had here in New Jersey. I don't know how many more weeks of heavy layers and winter boots I could have taken! Thankfully it's time to put away those heavy coats, pack up the thick sweaters and send the wool pants to the dry cleaners for the last time.

This month I asked my Stitch Fix stylist for color and work wear and they sent me some fun pieces! I also asked for a variety of designers and I got a box of five items from five different labels. I made a deal with myself that I can only keep one item from each fix. I know lots of people are looking for the 5-item fix, where they keep all five items, but I'm looking only to add really fun and special pieces to my wardrobe. This was really difficult this month, because Stitch Fix sent me some really cute items!

41Hawthorne - Daphne Scalloped Colorblock Dress
First up, this scalloped colorblock dress from 41Hawthorne. I was pleasantly surprised with this dress! The color gradient from dark red to white was perfect and the quality was great for a summer dress. Maybe because it was chilly out when I took these pictures, or it was the length - I decided to send this one back. I think if it were summer, I might have kept it!

Tart - Sonam French Terry Jacket

Next up, my favorite piece from this months fix! I've already worn this jacket a couple of times. It's incredibly comfortable and has been traveling with me around the world. While sitting on an airplane for eight hours, this jacket has been the perfect thing to keep me warm. If you're looking for a great layering piece, totally ask for this jacket in your next fix!

Margaret M - Emer High Waited Cropped Trouser
Under Skies - Camillia Floral Print Sleeveless Blouse

After getting these two pieces I decided to edit my style profile. No more orange. I do not look good in all this orange, I think it's my hair color. I've seen this top in another color from another Stitch Fix review and it was totally adorable. The shirt was so cute, but seriously, this color and me aren't friends. The pants? So great. But again, not in this color.

Yumi - Renese Marled Cable Knit Sweater

I've been on the hunt for a cute fisherman's sweater all winter. I think that this purple number would have been perfect, except that it really needed to be sized up to get the fit I wanted. Chunky sweaters need to be chunky! Loved the color though, such a nice alternative to the usual cream fisherman's sweaters out there.

Overall I'd give this fix an A-! Lots of fun, so much color and I found something I really love! As with every fix, I filled out the return page online and shared my thoughts on the items they sent me. Then I went to my style profile and removed orange and yellow from my preferences. With winter melting into spring, I can't wait to get warmer weather fixes. I always enjoyed those much more than the winter fixes.

Wondering what else I'm wearing in my fix?  Check out the links below.

Want to try Stitch Fix yourself? You can sign up through my referral link and they are nice enough to give me $25! I think the wait list is a little long right now, so be prepared to wait about two months before you receive your first fix!

Studs & Chiffon

Pastel pink and a flared skirt can go cute/adorable pretty quickly. That's when you have to throw on a leather jacket and hopefully that baby pink blouse has some tough girl, metal details. I got this skirt from Stitch Fix a few months ago and have been wearing it pretty consistently since then. I've decided that I just can't pull off the tea length skirts from Tibi and have been going with knee length and above.

I love this shirt because I picked it up while on a birthday trip to Montreal. It reminds me of the fun surprise weekend away that the boyfriend planned for us. That's why I always like to buy two souvenirs while on vacation - 1. a local cookbook and 2. a new piece for my wardrobe!

Stitch Fix #11 - March 2014

Spring is rounding the corner here in the tri-state area and that means that I had Stitch Fix send me some warmer weather clothes! I'm just about ready to pack my sweaters away for the year and say adios to my snow boots. While SF succeeded on sending me items that are more appropriate for warmer weather, I was left wishing for more color.

Haven't heard of Stitch Fix yet?  Check out my full explanation from a few months ago. Basically you fill out a style profile and they send you clothes.  Keep and pay for what you like, send back the rest.  Bam, two sentence review for you there.

I've been getting fixes for almost a year now and have added a number of fun pieces to my closet. With my summer of funemployment, I found myself holding back on buying too many pieces and picking just my favorite. That same ethos has continued on as I find myself at a new job. While many fixers keep calling out for the "5-item fix", I'm happy finding one or two perfect pieces. (The "5-item fix" is this - you love all 5 items, you keep all 5 items, you get 20% off the total. 25%? I can't remember, but it's a deal.) I've sent back a number of things that I was on the fence about. I have a large wardrobe (check out the extensive list here) and a limited closet space, I'm becoming a very picky shopper.

Come with me and see what I got in this months fix!

41Hawthorn - Filbert 3/4 Sleeve Popover Blouse
Mavi Gold - Aiden Ankle Length Skinny Jean
First up, this 41Hawthorne blouse. I have been receiving a lot of 41Hawthorne pieces in my fixes recently. I totally understand why, it's the SF house label. Of course they want to sell more of that. Personally, I like to have a mixed wardrobe and don't want to see the same blouse over and over. I got a very similar blouse in September and sent it back because I hated the sleeves. This blouse went right back in the package, for the very same reason. Plus, it's black. How boring.

The jeans are from Mavi Gold and were actually super comfortable. If I needed to wear a pair of jeans on my next 16 hour flight, these would be the jeans.  Soft, perfectly cut and a great blue.  Why didn't I keep them? You'll notice from my closet inventory that I already own over 30 pairs of jeans. I don't need another pair of classic blue jeans.

41Hawthorn - Dita Colorblock Sleeveless Ponte Dress
Sweet Rain - Alan Cowl Neck Asymmetrical Jacket
In these photos, I love this outfit. In real life, I was not sold on either piece. First up was another 41Hawthorne piece, the Dita Colorblock dress. It's such a cute color combination, the length was great and I really liked the cut of the shoulder and neckline. What's my problem? The white part was only partially lined. You could totally see the lining and exactly where it stopped. You could also see the exact color of my bra. Not cool. I wore a white tank in these shots, just to keep the lining from showing.

The Sweet Rain jacket is also so pretty in these images. Again, cut, color and style were perfect. My problem with this one was simple, the zipper! It was horrible. It was so chunky and metallic, it was impossible to zip up, unless you held the two halves of the jacket together and tried zipping. So sad too, I really like this top.

41Hawthorn - Ivy Tulip Print Tab Sleeve Blouse
Last up is the third 41Hawthorne piece from this fix. I wound up keeping this piece because I thought the tulip print was cute and I was in a springy mood. I did mention to SF that I don't want to see anymore 41Hawthorne tab-sleeved blouses. I've bought three already and I'm all set in that department.

Overall, not a bad fix this month. Since I'm not looking to buy everything that they send me, I'm not too sad that some of the items didn't work out. I'm just hoping that Stitch Fix doesn't turn into Wegmans*. Meaning, I like their private label, but I'd like other choices. I added an addendum to my style profile, requesting that they send no more than one 41Hawthorne item per fix. I'd prefer to see more variety in the designers in each fix, rather than more of the same.

Gravity

With my new job being business casual all the time, jeans are now reserved for the weekend. Skinny jeans and sweaters have been my weekend uniform for months now. The boyfriend helped pick this sweater out for me, he said the windowpane print made it look like my boobs were distorting gravity.  Guys... Strange creatures.

Rather than stick with an all black and white look, I threw on some neon accessories and my favorite fuschia YSL lipstick (Number 11). This lipstick will be making more often appearances now that Spring is coming!

Stitch Fix #10 - February 2014

Are you ready for more Stitch Fix fun?  It's been almost a year that I have been getting monthly fixes and it's still so much fun.  Though I've decided I like Stitch Fix better in the warmer months.  I think it's the bright colors and amazing prints that they send me for the spring and summer months. I'm hoping our weather here in the Tri-state takes a turn for the better soon, I want to beak out my lighter clothes and request summer clothes from Stitch Fix!

This month I asked for some fun clothes for my new job.  I was so happy to see a variety of color and print in my box this month.  I'm always a little sad when I open a box and find a monochromatic box full of black and white items.  No need to worry about that this month, everything was so bright and cheery!  I think the stylists at Stitch Fix know that I'm over winter.

First out of the box, this beautiful striped top from Daniel Rainn.  In our current weather, this top is only appropriate under a blazer.  It would be perfect in the warmer months (or in a warmer climate) with jeans.  Great color combo, great print, it was just a little more expensive ($78) than I would usually spend on a simple tank.  If it had sleeves, then maybe I would have ponied up the cash.

Daniel Rainn - Barcelona Striped Silk Short Sleeve Blouse

Next up, this chevron print dress.  The print is great, I loved the contrasting prints (it's actually the same material, just the other side of it).  Why didn't I keep this dress?  It was just too short and too cute.  I'm 5'9" and this dress really isn't long enough for work, maybe on someone a few inches shorter it would totally work.  Mostly, I thought this dress was just too adorable and sweet.  It felt too young on me.

By Ashley - Laney Chevron Print Knit Dress

I love colored jeans and I was excited to see a pair in my box this month.  Just Black is not a brand that I've heard of before and I was happy to give them a try.  These jeans were the most expensive item in my box, at $88, but they were an excellent skinny jean.  Why didn't I keep them?  I already own a pair of green skinny jeans!  If only they were in another color.

Just Black - Adora Skinny Jean

My stylist, Christine, read my requests and sent me a bunch of tops for work this month.  This embellished top isn't really work appropriate, but it's really fun.  Sadly it didn't fit very well, it rides up at the chest, and the sequined shoulders reminded me of my baton twirling days.  For all those reasons, this top went back in the bag.

Tart - Yusuf Embellished Shoulder Striped Top

Finally, this 41Hawthorne top was the winner of the bunch.  Look at that print!  Little swans!  So adorable.  My only problem with this top?  It's January and this shirt has no sleeves!  Brr...  At only $28 and the fact that this top is so fun, it stayed with me.

41Hawthorne - Monica Swan Print Hi-Lo Sleeveless Top

So it's a mixed review this month.  Two misses, two wins and one meh.  I haven't had a five piece fix in a few months, but I think that's because I've been doing lots of shopping at the outlets in Paramus.  I'm looking for special pieces to add to my wardrobe and tend to be very picky when it comes to my fixes.

I'm still enjoying getting my fixes, they're just so much fun!  I feel like as SF has gotten more customers, their variety of brands and pieces has really improved.  They also recently sent out a survey to their customers, asking for suggestions and honest feedback about their current business.  Perhaps in the future you'll see more items offered at Stitch Fix, including shoes or intimate apparel?  Who knows!
