Floral Love

This Ted Baker dress makes me so happy.  The cut, the print and the belt, I'm in love.  I feel like a 1940's London lady.  If I knew how to put my hair up into victory rolls, you'd be seeing them here today. Since I don't, I decided a bright red lip would have to do in the styling department.

I'm wondering how many times a month I can get away with wearing to work.  I'm so in love with this print that I also plan on buying the spring version in skirt form.  Just be sure to check the size conversions when you order from Ted Baker.  This dress is a size 1, which some how corresponds to a size 4. According to the website, everything about the brand is unique, including their sizes.  They're called "Ted sizes."

Miss Rogers Sweater

Happy New Year friends!  The new year seems to have brought lots of chilly air to the Tri-state region and I'm cold!  It's time to break out the heavy sweaters.  I found this sweater on the Victoria's Secret website a few months ago and have taken to calling it my "Mr. Rogers sweater."  I love pairing this long, heavy sweater with skinny jeans and booties.

How do you like to wear your long sweaters? Are you a fan of leggings, or maybe throwing it over a dress?

Necklace: Madeline (available in stores only)

NYE in NYC

Happy New Years Eve!  Do you have any big plans for tonight?  Personally, the boyfriend and I are going to go to a nice restaurant around 9:00, then seeking refuge in our apartment for some quality couch time to watch the ball drop.  I'll be wearing these pants...

... to dinner. And then some fleecy pants and a comfy tee to ring in 2014.

You may be wondering why I'm not doing something more exciting for the big night.  Why aren't we  watching the ball drop in Times square and then partying all night in NYC?  Well, we've done that already.  Once was enough, thanks.

A few years ago, the boyfriend and I decided to celebrate NYE in NYC and watch the big ball drop.  Unfortunately we decided to choose one of the coldest years in recent history to do so.  It was well below freezing all week and the temps dropped to the teens just in time for the big night.  We wore so many layers, bought those little hand and feet warmers and were still peoplesicles by the time midnight rolled around.

One other thing, I don't like to just sit around.  I have ADD or something and need to move, walk, stay warm somehow!  People start camping out in Times square just after 9:00am (I'm sure people are there earlier, but they're crazy).  The entertainment doesn't even start until 8:00pm! That's almost twelve hours of sitting in the cold.  Bring food, hot chocolate, and your own bathroom?

When it gets to a certain time, you can't enter Times square from the west or east, you have to walk all the way to 59th street and enter from the north.  It's a long walk, the ball is at 42nd street.  By the time the boyfriend and I decided to join the crowds in the square at 4:00, we were corralled at 50th street, seven blocks away from the ball drop.

No thank you.  We escaped and continued wandering the city for a few hours and finally settled at the corner of Bryant park - 42nd & 6th avenue - one block east of the ball drop, around 11:15.  The police cordoned off the street, yelled constantly at everyone and looked like they couldn't wait until tomorrow.  Luckily we were waiting on this corner with about a hundred other people. We weren't too cold anymore since we were all jammed together.

But remember, everyone else thinks they are more important than you/have a better idea of how to get to Times square.  They will try to push past you, sneak across the street and inevitably get screamed at by the police.  I must have heard "Excuse me, I'm trying to get through" about a thousand times.  My only response was "Where should I move? On top of this car I'm wedged against? Or perhaps into this crowd of shoulder to shoulder people?"  Seriously, if you are claustrophobic, avoid NYC on NYE.

When it was finally time for the ball to drop it got very loud and exciting.  There were fireworks and sparklers. Giant balloons and confetti floated down the avenues and bounced down the streets.  People cheered, blew horns and noisemakers and kissed their favorite person.  Then they all went home/back to their hotel rooms/raced to the train stations. The streets were clear by 12:30.

We did it once.  That was enough. Now we stay warm and either enjoy our friends or just our own company.

Should you plan a trip to NYC for NYE?  Maybe. Do it once in your life and plan ahead. The hotels charge the highest prices during this week, hundreds of dollars higher than the rest of the year.  The city is packed.  I know, there are already 8 million people here, but the NYE crowds are insane!  Reservations are your friend!  If anything, come this week for the sales. So many good deals out there right now!

Time to Celebrate

I'm saying something in the above image.  Want to wager any guesses on what it was?

Your eyes aren't fooling you either, I am standing on a sheet of ice.  I kept sliding off my mark which is why you don't really see many pictures of my feet today!  The tri-state area enjoyed a snowstorm followed by a quick rain shower this weekend.  Sunday morning we were greeted by ice covered everything - the car, the sidewalks, all the trees.  At least the trees were pretty.

I'd been eyeing this dress up for a little while. ! finally made up my mind that it was the dress I wanted to celebrate the holidays wearing! December and January is the perfect season to wear gold, maybe the office is also a good place to wear it. We'll see.  This weather was also the perfect occasion to pull my full length camel coat out of the closet. I don't know why I don't wear this coat more often, it's so warm!

Jacket: Banana Republic (a few years old, similar $, $$$)
Dress: Kenneth Cole (now on sale at Nordstrom!)
Tights: via DSW
Boots: Joie
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff (some fab colors on sale now!)

And just to let you know - It doesn't feel that cold outside, as long as you keep your gloves on. Plus you look like a tough chic.

Polished & Professional

I've been waiting a few weeks to share some pretty exciting news with you and today is the day!

It was almost three weeks ago that I woke up and put on this outfit. I rented a car and drove to Princeton where I had an interview for a position that I really wanted. If you've never been on a scientific interview let me explain how they usually work.

The interview lasts the entire day. I've been on some interviews that have lasted two full days. They usually include lunch or dinner with some of your possible future coworkers. They always require you to give an hour-long seminar about your past work. After the seminar, there are a series of small one-on-one interviews with different members of the team. It's stressful and takes a lot of energy, but the company really gets a feel for you and your skills and you get to know the company pretty well too.

I've been on the job hunt for the past few months, since my former company closed its doors and laid everyone off. I've gone on seven interviews, received three job offers and have accepted an offer at a start-up company in Princeton! My first day is Wednesday and I'm trying to pick out what I'm going to wear.

I'm so excited to start my new job and try to make a difference in the drug discovery world! My posts here will start to be a mix of my casual weekend looks and my business work looks! My collection of blazers are so thrilled to be getting out of the closet, they've been lingering there since last May!

This is my interview look and I've honed it pretty well over the summer.  Classic suit with a simple cream colored shell. Chemistry necklace to show my love of my field. Flats because I don't want to be too tall, but they're shiny because I need a little hint of personality.

A Casual Thanksgiving

If I were staying up north for thanksgiving, this is totally what I would be wearing. Something warm and fuzzy. Though like a good percentage of the people in the United States, I'm traveling for the holiday.

It's the busiest travel day of the year and there is a huge weather system sitting over the Northeast right now. I hope that everyone who is traveling through my part of the country gets to their final destination! The BF and I are southern bound tomorrow, we love air travel on Thanksgiving. It's so quiet at JFK! The weather system brought really cold temps ahead of it, so I struggled finding places to take pictures without freezing.

I actually wound up in the bridge that goes between the east and westbound train tracks.  Sometimes it's a wind tunnel in there, yesterday it was actually pretty warm! Like a little greenhouse.

It also helps I was wearing my new sweater.  The BF and I were at Bloomingdale's and found this Theory sweater for 60% off. It's so fluffy, it feels like it's generating its own heat!

Last year I probably wouldn't have considered even trying on these boots, it was the ladies at the Joie store that convinced me to give them a go. And I love them! They're totally different from anything I own. I'm looking forward to wearing them all winter long.

Sample of Wonder

It's getting cold out and I want nothing more than to dress from head to toe in knitwear. This dress just about fits the bill. A few weeks ago I made it to the C Wonder sample sale and picked up a few pieces, including this dress.

It's an actual sample from the original design work on the dress. You'll notice it's a slightly different color than the production piece at C Wonder. I made sure to try it on before taking it home, just in case there was something strange with the sample piece. Luckily there was dressing room at the sample sale, though it was just a big communal room for all the ladies! Thanks to the sale I was able to pick up this dress for less than half the original (and still current) price.

In order to stay warm, I decided to pair it up with some thick tights and my new black ankle booties from Joie. Are you near a Joie boutique and want some new shoes? They are pairing up with Soles4Souls until November 28th. Bring in a pair of gently worn shoes and you'll receive 20% off of your full price shoe purchase! (I got this pair by trading in a pair of Pumas that never really fit right.)

Note to self: Do not shoot images on the roof when it's windy.

A Vest, with Sleeves?

I think fall is finally here to stay. The weekend forecast calls for daytime temps in the 30's! I think that means I won't be wearing these capris again, at least not without knee high boots on my feet. How would you style these capris for the winter time?

I've also taken to layering, a lot! I got this vest from Century 21 for my birthday (thanks BF!) and have been wearing it non-stop since then. It's so warm! Though I did complain that my arms were cold while the BF and I went out to dinner the other night.  He proclaimed "It's such a tragedy that they don't make vests with sleeves!" Funny guy. Hilarious.

I've been testing out my new Rebecca Minkoff bags this week too, trying to decide which one I like the best. The BF likes this one (the Hudson Moto) the most, saying it's more versatile than the quilted bag. I'm not sure, I like both! I might have to find something else for my friend for Christmas!
