Wilde Prints

The weather around here is really getting hilarious! Last Thursday brought another snow day from work as fourteen inches of snow came down, followed by two hours of hard rain, followed by another three inches of snow. This week we are expecting to see temperatures rise above fifty degrees and I'm expecting to see things floating down the street as the entire state of New Jersey is a flood zone.

In order to cheer myself up from this silly weather, I threw on one of my favorite printed skirts.  I got this bold pencil skirt from Anthropologie this past Fall and have been wearing it from warm weather though the snowstorms. (Someone is selling a size 12 on Poshmark!)

If you need a little cheering up, wear one of your bright, summery prints with a few of your winter pieces. You'll be feeling like spring in no time, because I think we can't expect real spring for another few weeks.

Adorable Trends

My usual picture place is an alley of ice!  The weather in the tri-state area has everyone saying "Enough already!"  Even this Buffalo girl is getting to that point.  Last week wound up being a three day work week because of the snow and ice storms.  What you see in these images is what those storms left behind.

I've been wearing lots of layers these days.  Sweaters over blouses, trousers over tights, two jackets, I've done it all.  I wore this look to work the day after an ice storm. Let it be known that I love peplums, no matter what the glitterati say about them being passe.  They're adorable.

And what do you think of my hair? I've been playing with parting it in the center, I'm not sure if I like it.

What item in your closet do you continue to wear, even though it might be considered "So last year!" ?

Pockets

I'm a sucker for any skirt or dress with pockets.  I originally liked this skirt, but once I tried it on and noticed the pockets, I was sold.  Not that I want to put anything in my pockets, I'm not a guy. I just like them.

On warmer (above 20 ºF) days, I like to wear skirts and dresses to work.  I think it's because of all my years spent in the lab.  No skirts, no tights, no open-toe shoes, no heels.  Now that I'm doing a lot of business development work, I am in an office and get to wear skirts everyday!  I'm just hoping the temperatures will rise a little!

I love these Joie booties and wish that I bought them in a few more colors!  These black leather ones are still available, along with an amazing blue suede color!

Fancy Pants Business Casual

I've been working at my new job for just over a month and have really been enjoying it!  It's a very small company and it's exciting to be in on the ground floor of something.  I've been doing a combination of research and business development and lots of work on setting up our new chemistry labs.  I've also been having fun dressing the part of a businesswoman.

Today I layered one of my favorite Anthro peplums under a warm, yet structured, knit blazer.  To keep the look from being completely monochromatic, I threw on these comfy flats.  I picked them up at TJ Maxx last year, but I have seen them recently at Marshalls in another color!

Depending on what my calendar says will determine my footwear.  This particular day I was touring some labs and needed to be quick on my feet, no high heels this day for me!

Notice anything different about these pictures?  Ten points to the person that figures it out!

One Dress - Day to Night

Sometimes I'm lucky enough to head straight from work to a night out on the town.  I commute to work on the train and that means my train takes me directly to the city, no stopping at home for this girl!  How do I go from day to night?  With one killer dress!

When heading to work, I keep it all buttoned up and professional.  This Banana Republic blazer keeps me office appropriate, yet warm.  I love a knit blazer, especially since my office is frigid.

Gotta be sure to carry a big bag that will not only hold the things I need for work, but also carry my little make-up bag and my clutch for tonight!

A delicate statement necklace (made by a 3-D printer!) adds just a little bit of fun.

And these fabulous Tahari Mary Jane pumps finish off the look.  To get the party started for night...

I trade out my shoes for something a little higher and brighter!

I swap out my bag for this fabulous woven clutch from French Connection and switch my jewelry for something a little heavier, blingier.

And of course I ditch the blazer.  The leather panels on this Kenneth Cole dress (available in stores) were secretly hidden all day!  With just those few changes and I've gone from desk worker to dinner ready!

How do you go from day to night?  I'm dying for your secrets!

Icy!

I'm back to New Jersey after a wonderful Christmas visit to my parents house in Buffalo, NY.  The weather upstate was all over the place this past weekend.  My plane landed in dense fog.  A steady rain melted all of the snow, flooded everything and then froze overnight, creating the winter wonderland you see in these images.  Luckily the waters receded, the temperatures dropped and snow fell just in time for a white Christmas.

I wore this outfit for a day shopping with my dad.  He took a look at me and asked "Are you going shopping like that?"  I countered him with the same question.  He looked at his flannel and jeans and answered yes.  Off shopping we went.

I have also discovered that dog fur doesn't stick to neoprene.  It's the only fabric I'm wearing on my next visit home.

Time to Celebrate

I'm saying something in the above image.  Want to wager any guesses on what it was?

Your eyes aren't fooling you either, I am standing on a sheet of ice.  I kept sliding off my mark which is why you don't really see many pictures of my feet today!  The tri-state area enjoyed a snowstorm followed by a quick rain shower this weekend.  Sunday morning we were greeted by ice covered everything - the car, the sidewalks, all the trees.  At least the trees were pretty.

I'd been eyeing this dress up for a little while. ! finally made up my mind that it was the dress I wanted to celebrate the holidays wearing! December and January is the perfect season to wear gold, maybe the office is also a good place to wear it. We'll see.  This weather was also the perfect occasion to pull my full length camel coat out of the closet. I don't know why I don't wear this coat more often, it's so warm!

Jacket: Banana Republic (a few years old, similar $, $$$)
Dress: Kenneth Cole (now on sale at Nordstrom!)
Tights: via DSW
Boots: Joie
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff (some fab colors on sale now!)

And just to let you know - It doesn't feel that cold outside, as long as you keep your gloves on. Plus you look like a tough chic.

Consignment Shopping in NYC

I am a big fan of sales. Who isn't? On a recent trip to the city, the Boyfriend and I avoided our usual haunts and shopped consignment. Not familiar with consignment? Well, when people with fancy clothes realize their closet it too full to fit more fancy clothes, they call the consignment shop.  The buyer will check over the clothes and assign them a price. When the item sells the original owner gets a percentage, usually 40-60%, and the store keeps the rest. Most stores have a consignment period. If a piece sits there for longer than that time, it gets marked down or sent back.

New York City has lots of fancy ladies with full closets, so there are a lot of consignment shops. If you want to make an afternoon of it head to the East Village, Soho and Nolita. In one day, we stopped at ten different consignment shops including Roundabout, Cadillac's Castle, STA, Tokyo Joe's & Buffalo Exchange.

I wound up getting a few amazing pieces, most of them with their original tags still attached, including these Theory shorts. I've been looking around for a pair of plaid shorts and have tried on at least three pairs. I picked up these at Roundabout (their Soho location has a great contemporary collection) along with an adorable Chloe skirt.

Next time you come to New York City, be sure to check out some of these shops. You might just score an amazing piece at an out of this world price. Think Chanel for 60% off. Yeah, it's that good.

BTW, it was a little chilly out when I took these photos! Brr!

Layered Travel

Happy December! How is it already December? I hope that you had a lovely thanksgiving weekend (or a lovely regular weekend for my non-American friends!) Personally, I'm just now on my way back from visiting the BF's parents in Florida.  It was a great change of scenery and weather from the chilly weather we've been having up here in the tri-state.

I'll be sharing some vacation posts later in the week, but this is what I was wearing for our trip down to the sunshine state. Upon our arrival I shed the white button down and slipped on some ballet flats. Layering is such a great way to travel from cold to hot weather!

I'm also very excited about this new bag. I'd been eyeing it up for a few weeks at the Soho C Wonder, but it was $250. Eventually it disappeared from both the stores and the website so I thought all was lost. Just after my birthday they had an online flash sale and this bag was there! For only $99! I didn't even hesitate, it was going to be mine. I love the combination of oxblood, cognac and navy leather, it's so pretty.

I got this jacket two years ago at Kenneth Cole.  Now I don't know if you've ever been to a Kenneth Cole store, but it seems they're always having a sale and trying to just give everything away. This jacket was new to the racks, but also included in their 40% off jackets sale. I bought it a little big so I could pile on the sweaters underneath.
