A Home for the Monster

My work laptop is a monster. At ten pounds and fifteen inches long, it doesn't fit in any traditional computer bag. While my coworkers suggested I get a boring and ugly bag from Staples, I was determined to find something pretty and functional for my monster.

While wandering through Saks 5th Ave a few weeks ago, I came across the MAB tote. I have a few other Rebecca Minkoff bags, but they are all crossbody bags. This bright blue MAB tote caught my eye and I knew it was just perfect. Wide enough to fit my monster, structured enough to hold up and stylish enough for me to be happy with carrying it everyday. The monster now has a new travel bag. It was a total coincidence that my favorite nail polish happens to match!

Oh yeah, this dress! Can you believe that the boyfriend picked it out for me? He's been picking up every black and white dress we've come across while shopping and showing it to me. This Marc Jacobs number is so sweet, with the A-line skirt, it makes me feel very girly!

Leather & Sun

The days are getting longer, but they're not getting any warmer yet! The city is in for another snowstorm today and we're all hoping that it's the last one of the year. I wore this outfit last weekend for an afternoon out with the boyfriend, when the temps rose above forty-five.  I got this Theory skirt a few weeks ago at the big Bloomingdale's sale and have been waiting for the proper destination and temperature to wear it. It's not really a work appropriate length!

I love that spring is coming because it means I can wear this coat again!  Being a commuter, I need to wear a coat that covers my behind. When spring finally arrives it's goodbye puffy coat and hello wool moto!

Volume & Warmth

Am I the only one living in fuzzy sweaters right now? I'm so glad I stocked up during December, because the only thing I'm seeing in the shops right now are flirty dresses and bathing suits. I'm certainly as ready for spring as the next Northerner, but I'm not quite in the mood to buy chiffon yet.

Until the weather breaks, you'll be seeing me in tights and booties. I bought all of these pieces during the fall and I'm loving pairing my chunky sweaters with voluminous skirts. Why? I can wear shorts under this! Makes for a much more comfortable walk to work!

Blue Legs

The temperatures are rising now, though randomly and it's still not yet warm often enough for me. I'm certainly happy that the sun is staying up longer and I can take these photos without my fingers going numb.  As the temperatures rose this past week, I have been able to go back to wearing fun dresses to work.  Of course tights are still a must, but they don't have to be black!

I scored this HELMUT Helmut Lang dress at the Bloomingdale's sale last week.  I love the seaming and the back zipper, it's so streamlined and chic. I've also been carrying this Ted Baker bag for weeks straight.  It fits all of my work essentials and is so pretty.

Pockets

I'm a sucker for any skirt or dress with pockets.  I originally liked this skirt, but once I tried it on and noticed the pockets, I was sold.  Not that I want to put anything in my pockets, I'm not a guy. I just like them.

On warmer (above 20 ºF) days, I like to wear skirts and dresses to work.  I think it's because of all my years spent in the lab.  No skirts, no tights, no open-toe shoes, no heels.  Now that I'm doing a lot of business development work, I am in an office and get to wear skirts everyday!  I'm just hoping the temperatures will rise a little!

I love these Joie booties and wish that I bought them in a few more colors!  These black leather ones are still available, along with an amazing blue suede color!

Adorable Work Wear

I've been having a great time with my new dress code at work.  I suppose it's only fun because it's different.  I'm sure after a few months of no casual days, I'll be sick of dressing up for work everyday.  For now I'll enjoy the novelty of it!

I wore this to work last week and was told that I looked adorable.  Sounds good to me.  When you wear a flouncy skirt, there are only a few words you can use to describe it. I got this See by Chloe skirt at Roundabout consignment in Soho.  I've found some great pieces there recently!  I paired it up with this blouse from one of my favorite shops, Joie.

For the remainder of the week I wore lots and lots of pants, with tights under them.  I'm not liking this cold weather.  Is it spring yet?

Rats

As another polar blast hits the East coast, I think I'm going to bundle up and stay in this weekend.  While I love wandering the streets of New York, they become frigid wind tunnels in January and February.  This weekend I'll be staying local and brunching in Montclair with the Boyfriend.

I picked up this adorable necklace from the Etsy Craft Cavalcade in Brooklyn, just before Christmas.  I got it from Lu Crafts, though it looks like she only has housewares on her etsy site right now.  I'm sure you could e-mail her and request one!

I carry a huge tote to and from work each day.  During the weekends I like to pare down to a lightweight crossbody bag.  I picked this one up from Kenneth Cole a few weeks ago.  I like to pet it.

Brrrr!!! Stay warm everyone!

Stitch Fix #9 - January 2014 & a HUGE Giveaway!

Happy New Year Stitch Fix friends! It's time for another fix and this one was lots of fun, though not so fun to photograph.  It's getting cold out!  My poor little fingers were freezing!  This fix came in the mail just before my Christmas trip home to Buffalo, so I took this fix home and had my family help me choose what to keep!

Haven't heard about Stitch Fix yet? You can read a full review and explanation in this post and decide if it's something you're into!  Basically you fill out an online profile and the Stitch Fix stylists send you some pieces from their vast collection.  There is a $20 styling fee that gets applied to anything you purchase.  Personally, I like to set up a Pinterest board for each coming season to help the stylists understand my style and what I've been lusting after.

This month I asked for a blazer for my new job and some cute weekend pieces.  The pieces they sent me ranged from - Just what I was looking for - to - Totally not my style.  Be sure to read through the entire post for a chance to win a $100 Stitch Fix gift card!!!

First up, this sheath dress from 41Hawthorne.  I've been getting at least one item from the Stitch Fix private label each month.  This month I got two. While I generally like the pieces from 41Hawthorne, I'm hoping for a little variety next month.  This dress was cute, but I wasn't liking the fabric. It felt a little to flimsy for a work dress.  I also just scored a few Hugo Boss dresses from the Bloomingdales Outlet recently, so back to California it went.

41Hawthorne - Clement Striped Sheath Dress

As far as trends go, the draped sweater hit hard this fall and Stitch Fix is determined to get me to buy a whole bunch of them. Remember the one on the right from two months ago?  Or maybe the one in the center looks familiar, I actually own that one.  I mentioned these things last month when I sent back the one on the left.

But that didn't stop them from sending me another one! I really loved this one, especially the detail at the wrist, but how long is this aztec draped sweater trend going to last?  I couldn't justify keeping this one.  You should totally ask for it in your next fix.  It was so warm!

Mystree - Arwen Aztec Front Draped Cardigan

Up next we have two major fails.  The Papermoon blouse was a weird fit for me, I didn't really like where the pockets were sitting either.  I feel like it's more of a summer shirt, sadly it's in a wintery color.  No more chiffon blouses during winter please!  These pants were also a miss.  Look how huge they are on me!  Also, I recently dropped a wad of credit at Elie Tahari and I'm pretty set in the trousers department. I haven't had any luck with trousers from Stitch Fix, yet.

Papermoon - Wynn Ikat Print Front Pocket Blouse
Margaret M - Arthur Trouser

The last thing out of my Stitch Fix box was this 41Hawthorne blazer, just what I asked for!  It's more of a casual blazer, as it's made from cotton, but the color is beautiful and the ruched sleeves are such a fun detail! I also loved the fit, it cinched in at the waist just perfectly!  Totally kept this piece.

I've been having fun with Stitch Fix for months now and I thought you guys might want to get in on the action!  This month, to celebrate the new year and thank you all for reading, I'm doing a Stitch Fix gift card giveaway!  Just use the Rafflecopter gadget below and earn a whole bunch of entries.  Tweet once a day for even more entries to win!  Good luck and let's start this year with lots of style!

Classic Buffalo

Welcome to a classic Buffalo, NY winter day!  While visiting my parents last week, we enjoyed a beautiful afternoon of fluffy, white snow. I had a great time playing around in the back yard!

To survive a snowy day in Buffalo you need the following...  1. A brightly colored jacket  2. A scarf you can snuggle down in  3. Tall boots to keep the flakes out  4. An empty calendar, because even if two feet of snow come down, nothing is going to be closed.
